What Peter Discovered
Peter had followed Jesus for a long time. He saw Jesus do many miracles. He heard Him teach great things. He watched Him live a very good life. When Jesus fed thousands of people with five loaves of bread and two fish, Peter helped serve the food. Peter recognized something very special in Jesus.
One day, Jesus and His twelve special friends were alone. We call these twelve men Jesus’ disciples. Peter was one of the twelve. Jesus asked His disciples a question. He said, "Who do people say that I am?"
The disciples traveled with Jesus. They watched Him work with large groups of people. They took care of some of Jesus’ business affairs. They heard what people said about Him. They could answer Jesus’ question better than anyone else.
Those twelve friends of Jesus said, "Some people say you’re John the Baptist. Some say you’re Elijah. Some say you might be one of the other historical prophets."
Every person they talked about was dead. John the Baptist had died recently. Elijah and the other historical prophets had lived hundreds of years earlier. They had all been great men of God, but they were all dead. Jesus’ power was so great people thought God might have brought a dead man back to life.
Then, Jesus asked a very important question. He said, "But who do you say that I am?"
Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God."
Jesus said, "God is good to you. Flesh and blood could not show you this truth. Only my Father in Heaven could show it to you."
Something wonderful had happened to Peter while he followed Jesus. He saw Jesus’ miracles and heard His teaching. He watched Jesus’ perfect life. Others who saw these same things didn’t understand who Jesus is. Peter understood because God had spoken to his heart. Peter didn’t hear God with his ears. Instead, God convinced his spirit that Jesus is the Son of God. God had showed him, and now Peter knew—Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God!
