What Nicodemus Discovered
Jesus spent much time in the city of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was where people worshiped. The government of the Jewish people met there too.
Jesus had a visitor one night when He was staying at Jerusalem. The visitor was named Nicodemus. He belonged to the Jewish ruling body. Jesus was not popular with the rulers.
Nicodemus was honest with Jesus. He said, "We know you are a teacher who has come from God. Nobody can do the kind of miracles you do without God’s help."
Jesus didn’t start talking about Himself. He talked about Nicodemus and his people instead. He said, "You must be born again if you want to see the kingdom of God."
Nicodemus thought he understood the kingdom of God. He didn’t understand how to be born again. He asked, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he go back into his mother’s body and be born?"
Jesus said, "You have only been born physically. You need to be born of the Spirit." He meant that Nicodemus and his people weren’t really even alive spiritually. They needed a new spiritual birth before they could be part of God’s kingdom. They needed to be born again to be in God’s spiritual kingdom now. They needed to be born again to be part of God’s Heavenly kingdom later.
Nicodemus said, "How can these things be?"
Jesus said, "Are you a teacher and don’t know these things? How will you understand if I tell you about heavenly things? Nobody has been to Heaven except the Son of man who is in Heaven."
Jesus often called Himself the Son of man. He also called Himself the Son of God. He could call Himself both because He is both God and man.
Jesus told Nicodemus how he could be born again spiritually. He said, "God loved the world so much that He gave His only born Son so whoever believes in Him will not die but will live forever." [To read Jesus’ exact words see John 3:16 in the Bible.]
The story of Nicodemus’ visit with Jesus' ends shortly after Jesus told him how to be born again.
Later in the Bible, we learn that Nicodemus did come to believe in Jesus. He believed secretly at first, but he couldn’t keep his faith secret. The other rulers hated Jesus. The Son of God was more important than they were, and they were jealous. These rulers planned to kill Jesus. They hoped to kill him legally as part of the government. What they wanted to do was wrong and unfair. Nicodemus had to speak out when they talked about killing Jesus. He told them the law required them to give a man a fair trial. The other rulers mocked him.
Later, the rulers convinced the Roman government to kill Jesus like a criminal.
After Jesus was dead, Nicodemus and another secret believer asked for Jesus’ body. They carefully buried it. Important things had happened in the life of the Son of God. Nicodemus couldn’t hide his faith any longer.
