Night airport

The Beacon

Those traveling cross-country at night often see a beam of white light arching across the sky. It sweeps across the blackness, then disappears. But it reappears, flashing steadily until sunrise. This light might seem eerie, except most people know what it is. It comes from the beacon at an airport.

To a pilot, the beacon isn’t a beam of light in the sky. He looks for a pinpoint of light flashing white and green on the ground. This combination of white and green lights shows the airport’s location and tells what type of airport it is.

On a good night, the beacon alone can guide a pilot home from a great distance. There are also bad nights on which low clouds and swirling snow hide the light. Electronic devices do help find the way under such conditions, but even then, spotting the beacon provides assurance that the pilot is safely home.

We don’t all have the privilege of flying airplanes, but we all need a beacon. This need is especially evident when we try to function at a spiritual level. Living very much by our five senses, we’re really limited when we seek the realm of the invisible God. We also allow our physical desires to drive us to offend God—to sin. We aren’t going to find God under those circumstances, and we need Him if we are to get the most out of life. We need Him if we are to live spiritually, and only those who live spiritually can continue to live after the body dies. It is a lot like being lost in the dark. But for those trying to find God, there is a Light. The Bible says of Jesus Christ:

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the

darkness comprehended it not.  (John 1:4-5)

Night beacon

Jesus is the Beacon, the light of the human soul. If we come to Him through faith, He will not only show us the way to God, but will also be the way to God. Here is how Jesus described the situation.

. . . even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

That whosoever believeth in him should not

perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:14-15)

Through Jesus, we can enter into a whole new life, a life worthy of the name now and that will last forever. He is the Light that guides to the ultimate destination.

One more thing. The night remains dark away from the beacon. The pilot who fails to see the beacon will fly on until he falls alone in the night. According to the Bible, the spiritual darkness didn’t comprehend Jesus. That is, it just didn’t get Him. So it is for us. If we will trust Him, He is light and eternal life. If we don’t, we wander away lost in the unseen spiritual world.

But as many as received him, to them gave he

power to become the sons of God, even to them

that believe on his name  (John 1:12)

So how about it? Have you found Jesus Christ, or are you still lost in the dark?
