Lesson 1: John 1:1-5

John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Background Information
The idea of “the Word” may seem a bit strange to you at first. As you delve further into the book of John, you will find that these initial verses are speaking of Jesus Christ. By describing Him as “the Word”, John is showing us that Jesus is God’s expression of Himself to us. According to Dr. Keith Drury, the Greek readers of John’s gospel would have understood the “Word” to be the
underlying principle. You will also find Jesus called “the Word of God” in Revelation 19.

  1. Who does our text say was God?
  2.  Who does our text say was in the beginning with God?
  3. Most Christians believe in the doctrine of the Trinity, that while God is One He is also three (one God eternally existent in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.) How would the fact that Jesus was God and was with God relate to this doctrine?
  4. Taking that “the Word” is Jesus Christ, what does John say was in Jesus?
  5. What was this life to humanity?
  6. Did the darkness benefit from the light?
