Lesson 1: John 1:1-5

John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Background Information
The idea of “the Word” may seem a bit strange to you at first. As you delve further into the book of John, you will find that these initial verses are speaking of Jesus Christ. By describing Him as “the Word”, John is showing us that Jesus is God’s expression of Himself to us. According to Dr. Keith Drury, the Greek readers of John’s gospel would have understood the “Word” to be the
underlying principle. You will also find Jesus called “the Word of God” in Revelation 19.
