3 John 1-2
The elder unto the well
beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Beloved, I wish above all things that
thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Background Information
As with all the New Testament
epistles, or letters, 3 John was written by a man whose writing was controlled
by God. The man in this case was the Apostle John, one of Jesus’ original
twelve disciples who also wrote the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, and
Revelation. John is believed to have been the only one of the twelve to die of
old age. While he may have escaped death at the hands of Jesus’ enemies, we
know from the book of Revelation that he was exiled for a time to a
Mediterranean island called Patmos.
John identifies himself as
an elder in verse 1. You can find more information on the meaning of
