Lesson 16: 1 John 4:4-6
1 John 4:4-5
Ye are of God, little
children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he
that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world,
and the world heareth them.

Questions
- Looking back to the first
three verses of this chapter there are two evil forces mentioned. List
them.
- In light of question one,
who would you say that the “them” that we have overcome are?
- 1 John 2:12-17 addresses
the little children. Based on that, when John speaks to “little children here
in 1 John 4:4, is he speaking to people who have been saved by Jesus
Christ?
- We read in 1 John 4:3
about the spirit of antichrist. In John 12, 14, and 16, Jesus refers to the
prince of this world. Has Jesus overcome these evil spirits?
- Who is He that is in
us?
- Can we count on Him to
overcome the devil and every other evil force as He works in us?
- As long as we remain in
Christ, are we safe?
- Can you count yourself as
an overcomer?
1 John 4:6
We are of God: he that
knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the
spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

Questions
- Starting in 1 John 1,
John refers to two groups of people as “us.” a) Who does he seem to be talking
about in 1 John 1:1-3? b) Who does he seem to be talking about in 1 John
1:6-10?
- Does our text in
combination with the “Related Scriptures” indicate that Christians should
follow the official leaders of the church?
- 1 Timothy lists the
qualifications of church leaders. 3 John promises discipline against a sinning
church leader. Would these Scriptures tend to make you think that church
leaders were a law unto themselves or that they were accountable to God for
their leadership?
- Looking at 1 John 4:6, is
the person whose teachings go against the Bible of God?
- Is the person whose
teachings are significantly different than the beliefs of most born-again
Christians more likely to be of God or of the devil?

we listen to people who speak the truth in God’s name?
